Orthotics And Prosthetics.
At ICON Medical Center we have started to fabricate custom
made foot orthoses using our AMFIT foot scanner and computerized orthotic
carving machine. The benefits of manufacturing this way is that all devices are
made for each individual rather than being a generic design. We can accommodate
many types of foot problems such as plantar fasciitis (Pain in the heel),
metatarsalgia (pain in the forefoot), hammer toes and hallux valgus. The most
prevalent problem in Qatar is flat foot.
Around 10% of the population have flat feet,
and for the most part this doesn't cause any problem, however, due to the
bio mechanical aspects of flat feet, the condition tends to be progressive and
get worse as we get older. The second important point is that flat feet also
affect the alignment of the knees, hips and lower back, leading to knee and
back pain as well as foot pain in later life.
Children with flat feet often have problems
participating in sports, they sometimes see themselves as being “un-athletic,”
which means that they can become sedentary.
Its important that children who have flat
feet see a professional who can assess their feet and provide them with
orthoses that can realign their feet and lower limbs, which has a threefold
benefit:
- Improved lifestyle, increased efficiency means that the child has more energy to participate and less fatigue
- Better alignment means that the chances of progression are reduced so is developing deformity of the knees, hips and lower back.
- Reduced incidence of pain and discomfort Catching children early before the age of seven years has the greatest benefit, but obviously any age will give long term benefits. Adults with flat feet, might be asymptomatic now, but it’s likely that unless action is taken to prevent progression the patient will develop joint problems and pain in middle age.

Icon Medical Center
Welcome to this newly
established Blog for ICON........
The International Center for
Orthopedics and Neurosciences opened its doctors to the citizens and residents
of Qatar in December of 2013. We have established the health and wellness of
the people of Qatar as a primary goal,
that we cooperate with all government and private organizations to achieve.
At ICON we believe that
communicating with people is a foundation in health care practice, and it is
with that in mind that we have started this blog in order to communicate with
the people of Qatar.
Communication is a two way
road so as much as we are going to be writing this blog weekly we would like
you, our community member, to interact with us. the interaction does not have
to relate to ICON itself but will extend to all musculoskeletal health and
fitness issues. You will ask and we will try and reply. If you like our answer
please do let us know that and if you don't please let us know as well so that
we can take the discussion further.
As a social media user I did
not know what a blog was until recently, and I take pride in saying that I have
been using social media for years. Now that I know what it is I can say boldly
that it is the most interactive social media tool available.
So starting this week please
join in and interact with us with questions and comments, this blog will roll
over to our Facebook page as well as our twitter account, so please take your
pick and choose your preferred social media interaction platform. I will be
alternating on this blog with a lot of my colleagues from our diverse specialties, but i promise you I will always be available to answer and
respond to your interactions.......
